Planning a wedding is exciting, and daunting, and fun, and overwhelming and a lot more all at once. You likely aren’t an event planner, but you’re suddenly the mastermind behind an all-day party for upwards of 100 people with food and decorations and music and a bar and other accommodations and a lot of input from a lot of places. And you’re hoping it all comes together into something cohesive that authentically represents your vision… it can feel like a lot!

But it’s okay. We’ve got you covered!

Remember this: Your wedding vision is the foundation for your day. Planning intentionally ensures that every detail, photo, and moment reflects your story and preserves your memories.

It’s easy to stumble into some common pitfalls along the way that can leave you feeling more stressed than inspired. Let’s take a look at some of these challenges and how you can navigate them with confidence, so your wedding vision remains as authentic and beautiful as your love story.

1. Getting Lost in Trends

Searching Pinterest for “Wedding Trends” will easily provide you with hundreds of lists of “The top 10 wedding trends of the year!” and most of them will be different. That can be really overwhelming. With you many “must-have” ideas out there, it can easily feel like you need to include a little of everything — from neon signs to pampas grass and statement balloon arches. The result? You can end up with a wedding that feels more like a checklist of trends than a cohesive vision that captures your authentic love story.

As you peruse the trends, focus on what resonates with you as a couple and ask yourselves:

  • Does this element feel meaningful to us? How so?

  • Will this stand the test of time when we look back at our photos and videos?

💡 Pro Tip: Use trends as inspiration, but let your story be the foundation. A cohesive vision always photographs and films better than a mix-and-match aesthetic. 2. Overlooking Practicalities

It’s easy to fall in love with ideas that look stunning online but don’t align with your budget, venue, or timeline. Picture this: You’re dreaming of hanging floral installations, but your venue’s high ceiling makes it impractical. Or you want epic golden hour photos, but your timeline has sunset right in the middle of dinner..

Balancing creativity with practicality ensures your vision comes to life smoothly. When planning:

  • Check that your ideas are feasible for your venue and timeline.

  • Prioritize items that fit within your budget and add real value to your day.

💡 Pro Tip: Talk with your vendors early! When we know your vision and must-have photos and footage we can help plan your timeline accordingly.

3. Forgetting to Prioritize Key Moments

Does your vision include photos of sunrise yoga on the beach with your girls? Or video of the guys getting ready in the den of a century-old mansion? Does it include photos of you and your partner strolling through a field of wildflowers in the golden hour glow? Think about the moments you want turned into memories and start there.

To avoid this pitfall, make a list of must-have moments. Do you want:

  • A quiet first look together?

  • Candid shots of your parents or grandparents seeing you in your wedding attire?

  • Epic golden-hour couple portraits?

Share these priorities with your photography and videography team so they can ensure your timeline supports capturing these moments.

💡 Pro Tip: Your wedding vision isn’t just about how things look—it’s about how they feel. Key moments tell the story behind the details.

4. Not Collaborating With Vendors

Your vendors are your creative partners, and we want to bring your vision to life. But when couples don’t share their ideas or vision early, it can lead to misaligned expectations. Imagine planning a romantic, soft-lit vibe, but your florist uses deep, bold reds and your photographer assumes you prefer high-contrast images. You may end up with incredible florals and stunning photos, but they won’t represent your vision.

To avoid this, keep your vendors in the loop:

  • Share your mood board and priorities early in the process.

  • Encourage collaboration between your planner, florist, and photo/video team to ensure everyone’s aligned.

💡 Pro Tip: Great communication makes for better photos and videos. When all your vendors are on the same page, your vision shines!

5. Letting Others’ Opinions Take Over

Ideally, planning your wedding is a one-time event, so you rely on others who’ve already done it to help guide you through. But it’s easy for those ideas and opinions to steer your vision off course. Maybe someone insists on certain traditions or discourages your idea that they don’t like, leaving you second-guessing your choices.

While it’s important to consider input from loved ones, remember that your wedding day should reflect your values and love story—not theirs. Politely thank them for their ideas, but stay grounded in what feels authentic to you.

💡 Pro Tip: A clear wedding vision helps you confidently say, “This is what feels right for us.”

Bonus Tip: Think Outside the Box With Your Timeline

Sometimes, the key to bringing your wedding vision to life means rethinking the traditional timeline. If your dream moments don’t align with a typical wedding day flow, by all means, get creative!

For our wedding, we envisioned a sunset ceremony by the river, followed by an intimate dinner at a single, long farmhouse table under the stars. The challenge? A traditional timeline didn’t work—dinner would’ve been served too late, and we would’ve missed the golden-hour light we wanted for our photos.

So, we flipped the script:

  • Guests arrived for a cocktail hour first, mingling and enjoying drinks and appetizers.

  • Dinner was served as the sun dipped behind the trees, creating a magical atmosphere and perfect lighting.

  • After dinner, we changed into our formal attire for a breathtaking sunset ceremony.

  • The evening ended with dancing under the stars.

This non-traditional timeline allowed us to enjoy every moment, capture stunning golden-hour photos, and share a meal in a way that felt true to us.
